Gold-plated fashion jewelry is made by covering a base metal, such as brass or sterling silver, with a thin layer of gold through a process called electroplating. This gives the jewelry the appearance of being made entirely of gold, but at a more affordable price. However, the thin layer of gold can wear off over time with regular use, revealing the base metal underneath. Gold-plated jewelry is a popular choice for fashion accessories and costume jewelry. **
